Over a year I made work alongside the residents of the small coastal plotland of Jaywick, Essex. Built between the wars to provide restorative spaces for populations from London – Jaywick’s housing was meant to be temporary. Yet it still stands becoming infamous due to a tv program that vilified its residents. The original houses are constantly adapted to withstand the weather, erosion and modern day needs. Repeated attempts to create higher sea walls mean that everyone lives behind tall barriers.
Over time I came to know how residents often refused to leave when offered alternatives. Their pride for this seaside space, a determination to resist and passion to speak the truth became central to my work. Work that was shown, for 1 month, both inside and out on the Martello Tower which sits like a role model at the centre of the area.
